Great is thy faithfulness ...

I first heard the hymn "Great is thy Faithfulness" over 30 years ago when it was sung at a friend's wedding. Since then it has been my standby both as a hymn and as a prayer.

At this time of year when the sunrise can be so amazing, I often think of the following words from the hymn:

... morning by morning new mercies I see ...

But the lines that really stand out for me are these:

Pardon for sin and a peace that endureth
Thine own dear presence to cheer and to guide
Strength for today and bright hope for tomorrow
Blessings all mine with ten thousand beside.

What a wonderful promise these words hold in times of need; words which I imagine found their inspiration from Psalm 65:

5 You answer us with awesome and righteous deeds,
God our Saviour, the hope of all the ends of the earth

and of the farthest seas,
6 who formed the mountains by your power,
having armed yourself with strength,
7 who stilled the roaring of the seas,
the roaring of their waves,
and the turmoil of the nations.
8 The whole earth is filled with awe at your wonders;
where morning dawns, where evening fades,
you call forth songs of joy.

So let us be joyful as we view the beauty of the sunrise and know that our gracious Lord will be with us, standing by to give us hope and strength, whatever the day may hold.
