Marilyn For Passion Sunday says
Something I’ve thought about a lot recently is the shame of the cross. If I’m honest it wasn’t until Mel Gibson’s film The Passion that I fully realised the horror of a Roman crucifixion. To see the scene acted out, Jesus stripped; beaten and crucified is a sobering thing.
I like that verse in Hebrews that speaks of Christ ‘enduring the cross and despising the shame.’ He was prepared ‘to lay His life down’ for our salvation. That’s amazing.
Feelings of shame can be hard to bear at times. Humiliation can be a bitter pill to swallow. We may feel it for ourselves or for someone we love. There are things we find hard to share, even to our closest friends, but He who ‘humbled Himself and became obedient to death, even death on a cross’ understands and has been there before us. What a Saviour, what a friend!
