DAY 1 ASH WEDNESDAY
Every Lent I am reminded that Jesus himself was severely tempted and I am encouraged by the way in which he withstood those temptations by counteracting the devil's wiles because he was full of the Holy Spirit and by his knowledge and understanding of Scripture. ( For the account of this read Luke 4:1-13)

'It is written' is a sure foundation for us, for we can stand on the promises of God, confident that what is written, if taken properly in context, can enable us to gain the victory.
Lent is not essential for the Christian life, many Christians in other denominations do not make much of these weeks before Easter, but if used in a positive way, ie taking time to allow the Holy Spirit to minister to us, rather than merely giving things up, then it can be an extremely beneficial discipline.

I have to say that the 'People's Lent Blog' is one of the most inspired things I've seen a church do in ages. Great stuff Mary!

Thank you Nigel for that encouragement.
