Ash Wednesday - the Archbishop's first Lent reflection
Wednesday 9 March
................... today is the first day of Lent. In contrast to the festivities of Pancake Day, it is a time of sober contemplation and fasting where we reflect on God's sacrificial love for us.
That may not immediately sound like a great thing to you, but actually having a time for peace and reflection is very important in our busy lives – whether you believe in Jesus or not.
In our daily lives we should think about other people, and not just constantly focus on ourselves and our own needs. Lent is a time for when the Church puts the spotlight on our human condition and in these difficult times there are many around us who need our love and support.
Let us all care deeply about every single person. Let us listen to people and pray for whatever is going on in their lives.
God loves you – never forget that. May his peace and love rest on you during this time of Lent. Why not pray this prayer throughout Lent?
Almighty and everlasting God, who hatest nothing that thou hast made, and dost forgive the sins of all them that are penitent: Create and make in us new and contrite hearts, that we worthily lamenting our sins, and acknowledging our wretchedness, may obtain of thee, the God of all mercy, perfect remission and forgiveness; through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen
