5 Your love, O LORD, reaches to the heavens,
your faithfulness to the skies.
6 Your righteousness is like the mighty mountains,
your justice like the great deep.
O LORD, you preserve both man and beast.
7 How priceless is your unfailing love!
Both high and low among men
find refuge in the shadow of your wings.
8 They feast on the abundance of your house;
you give them drink from your river of delights.
9 For with you is the fountain of life;
in your light we see light.
10 Continue your love to those who know you,
your righteousness to the upright in heart.
11 May the foot of the proud not come against me,
nor the hand of the wicked drive me away.
In these verses we find the psalmist making an attempt, which is always bound to be an attempt, to define and praise the immeasurable greatness of the loving kindness, faithfulness and righteousness of God. The whole world is full of God’s “grace and faithfulness”.
In verse 9, our writer sees the great potential of life in union with God. “For with you is the fountain of life, in your light we see light.” A fountain spreads out from its source, fans out to make contact with wider and wider space. So does a beam of light having passed through a focus. God’s beam focuses on you and me. In that light “we see light” and it can spread out from us to those around us.
Just as everything subsists in the sun’s life and heat and just as the flower opens and blossoms in response to sunbeams, so it is that the “light” of God, the heavenly light of the glory of his presence, causes the life of each one of us to grow and prosper and which gives life meaning, strength and stability.
Without God our lives are exposed to meaningless, emptiness and waste. But, “In him we live and move and have our being.” (Acts: 17; 28) Our “Gethsemanes” and “crosses” are transformed to “Resurrection”.
