Filey Parish 40 Days and Nights , Palm Sunday

Palm Sunday in Jerusalem

Psalm 118
26God bless the one who comes, in the name of the LORD!
We praise you from here in the house of the LORD.
 The LORD is our God, and he has given us light!
Start the celebration! March with palm branches
 The LORD is my God! I will praise him and tell him how thankful I am.
Tell the LORD how thankful you are, because he is kind  and always merciful.

On a visit to the  Holy Land we shared the Eucharist with the congregation of St. Georges Cathedral in Jerusalem, on Palm Sunday. The venue was very exciting and evoked many thoughts of Our Lord 's Passion and especially His triumphal entry into the city.
It was interesting to see the people with full-sized palm fronds and to share the familiar liturgy in Arabic and English : the preacher was a visiting lady bishop from America.
On another occasion when we walked down the hill from the Mount of Olives towards Gethsemane I was struck by the awkward steepness of the road and these familiar words came to mind.

Ride on, ride on, in majesty!
Hark! all the tribes Hosanna cry;
O Saviour meek, pursue Thy road
With palms and scattered garments strowed.

Perhaps the coats flung on the road before Jesus' donkey
steadied its steps?
