Filey Parish 40 days and nights Day 6

“The good book”

Psalm 19:7-14

The law of the Lord is perfect, reviving the soul; the testimony of the Lord is sure, making wise the simple; the precepts of the Lord are right, rejoicing the heart; the commandment of the Lord is pure, enlightening the eyes; the fear of the Lord is clean, enduring forever; the rules of the Lord are true, and righteous altogether. More to be desired are they than gold, even much fine gold; sweeter also than honey and drippings of the honeycomb. Moreover, by them is your servant warned; in keeping them there is great reward. Who can discern his errors? Declare me innocent from hidden faults. Keep back your servant also from presumptuous sins; let them not have dominion over me! Then I shall be blameless, and innocent of great transgression. Let the words of my mouth and the meditation of my heart be acceptable in your sight, O Lord, my rock and my redeemer.

PERFECT! Totally complete, without error and totally from God. The Bible is fundamental to our faith. Today, there are many people that want to challenge and twist the Bible for their own benefit and selfish desires:
2 Timothy 4: 3 “For the time is coming when people will not endure sound teaching, but having itching ears they will accumulate for themselves teachers to suit their own passions…”

This is a great shame. The Bible is God’s word. Not a book written about God but a book written by God. Reading the Bible is like God physically speaking to us, as if he was right in front of us. Do we get that???

2 Timothy 3: 16 - 17 “All Scripture is breathed out by God and profitable for teaching, for reproof, for correction, and for training in righteousness, that the man of God may be competent, equipped for every good work.”

The Bible outlines everything for life, relationships, worship, giving, how to bring up children, sex. It for our benefit. The Bible is now, however, is not easy to understand. We have to remember it was originally written in Greek and Hebrew. So, there are difficulties with translation. Additionally, the Bible is very counter cultural and challenges our thoughts, traditions and lifestyles. But, we have to realise, this is God’s word! Would you treat it differently, if God came to you and spoke it to your face? The Bible is for our own good. God created us and knows the best way for us to live. Studying it and meditating it therefore, is naturally satisfying to our souls. We need to align ourselves with the Bible.

Yours in Christ,

James

The bible is totally central to our faith.

I love this, what is says about preaching the bible in church

I charge you in the presence of God and of Christ Jesus, who is to judge the living and the dead, and by his appearing and his kingdom: PREACH THE WORD; be ready in season and out of season; reprove, rebuke, and exhort, with complete patience and teaching. 2 Timothy 4

WHAT AT INTRO! that really sums up how important it is!
