Easter People (1) Myrtle

Sometimes you find saints when you are not looking. This is Myrtle. This picture was taken outside St Georges Cathedral Jerusalem on Mothering Sunday last month.
Just an ordinary mother, a fellow pilgrim with me in the land where Jesus walked and taught ,died and rose again. Until I got to know her that is. She knows her Lord , unafraid to talk about Him, to laugh with those who laugh and cry with those who cry. Her gifts are the ministry of service and acts of compassion.(Romans 12).
A retired nurse, she is still called upon to nurse the elderly several afternoons a week. As a volunteer she cooks twice a week for homeless people in her area , and her food is known as the best around ! She also gives her time teaching English to refugees and asylum seekers in classes held by her church in their Welcome Centre as a service to the community. She helps in her church creche and has a large circle of friends and family. She didnt tell me this -I found it from another. She is modest, but feisty and exudes the love of Christ.
She did tell me that when she first came to England and was taken by her landlady to her church she sat down and was asked to move as the seat was someone elses. She replied that if it was for Jesus she would move . I like that. We need to be challenged by routine and unecessary ritual.
I could also talk about her friend Carmen , another nurse and midwife who gave up work to nurse her husband for the 9 years before he died. She too helps young people from eastern Europe with English, and laughs and loves her Lord.
Saints are not dead only, but Easter People living amongst us.
