Lord, when there is more than enough food in the world to feed everyone,
Why do we fail so spectacularly to fill the mouths of all the thousands of hungry children?
Why do the surviving members of their families have to watch them slowly starve to death while at home we throw away the latest ‘2 for the price of 1’ meal we bought but didn’t eat before the ‘best before’ date expired?
Why do we blame the logistics of food distribution, when the logistics of our foreign holidays don’t seem to cause us any problems?
Why are self-help schemes used as an excuse not to help right now?
Why do the people with the most power at their disposal seem so powerless to help?

Is not this the kind of fasting I have chosen:
to loose the chains of injustice
and untie the cords of the yoke,
to set the oppressed free
and break every yoke?

Is it not to share your food with the hungry
and to provide the poor wanderer with shelter-
when you see the naked, to clothe him,
and not to turn away from your own flesh and blood?

Then your light will break forth like the dawn,
and your healing will quickly appear;
then your righteousness will go before you,
and the glory of the LORD will be your rear guard.

Isaiah 58:6-8 (NIV)

Why do we blame you Lord?
