Filey Parish: Blogging for Lent – Analyzing Temptation

Naming temptations is often the first step in overcoming them. I was reading an old article in Scripture Union’s “Encounter with God” which broke down the commonest temptations in this world into three – Money, Sex and Power. Maybe this can be broken down even further into two – Self-indulgence and self-adulation. We all suffer from these two temptations daily or at least I do! If anyone can add to this analysis I would be interested to hear about it through your comments. How does one overcome these two types of temptations? Two verse 15’s.
Self-indulgence – Give yourself to God instead of to self. (2 Corinthians 5:15)
And he (Jesus) died for all, that those who live should no longer
live for themselves but for him who died for them and was raised
again.
Self-adulation – Praise God instead of yourself. (Hebrews 13:15)
Through Jesus, therefore, let us continually offer to God
a sacrifice of praise -- the fruit of lips that confess his name.

  1. There is also the temptation of what Philip Yancey calls 'False infinites', those things that hold a position in our lives which God should occupy. This can include Money and Sex, but there is also the 'grass is always greener' scenario. We allow ourselves to be seduced by things we think will provide that 'missing link' in our lives; new jobs, hobbies, the perfect house, the perfect location, the perfect partner. We endow these things with the ability to make us happy, but they always disappoint because there is only one true infinite- God. I suppose this might come under the heading of Self-indulgence, so you still had it covered!
