I’ve just looked at Simon’s video. Follow that! I’m not even going to compete! Yesterday’s video was particularly poignant especially if you are trying to ration indulgence during Lent! But most telling was the last picture. Our mild pangs of hunger due to diets or token self-denials during Lent are nothing compared to the experience of millions of starving people who have no choice in the matter. I have just googled the word “hunger”. Notable results have been www.thehungersite.com. Click on their yellow button and their sponsors give more money to the hungry. The site encourages you to visit them daily and click to give more free. There are of course options on the site to give more from your own money.
Another result is www.bread.org. This is a Christian site which encourages American Christians to write to congress on world poverty issues. Select “Learn” and “Basic International Facts” and you come across some horrifying statistics such as:
• 963 million people across the world are hungry.
• Every day, almost 16,000 children die from hunger-related causes--one child every five seconds.
Does that bring hunger into perspective?
